SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team was unable to find the back of the net on Friday night and fell to cross-town rival Wofford by a score of 3-0 at County University Soccer Stadium.
In the 11th-minute, Michelle Calmeyn (Elk Grove, Ill.) beat Wofford goalie Erika Christensen but her shot from the left side of the box sailed wide right.
In the 19th-minute Wofford's Emily Bougas scored what proved to be the game-winner from the right side of the box. The Terriers (2-0) went ahead 2-0 when Chelsea Ashworth scored from the left side.
Upstate (0-2) rookie Katrina Savoy (Waldorf, Md.) had a pair of scoring chances in the 30th and 33rd-minutes. Savoy's first attempt sailed wide while her second attempt ricocheted off of the crossbar and allowed Wofford to maintain its 2-0 lead.
"We had a better second half than we did the first," said head coach Renee Lopez. "We are still looking to put together a full 90 minutes of play, but tonight was a good opportunity to utilize our bench as we used a total of 20 players against an important rival."
Courtney Mack (St. Leonard, Md.) found herself wide open at the top of the box but her attempt in the 51st -minute was saved by Christensen. In the 66th-minute, Mack again had a scoring opportunity but her deflected shot from the left side was snagged out of the air by Christensen.
The Terriers pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 85th-minute when Syndey Reed scored on a pass from Maggie Bosley.
Wofford led the way in shots (12-5), shots on-goal (6-2) and corner kicks (7-1). Both Collins and Christensen tallied two saves in the match. Upstate also recorded a team save in the match.
The Spartans were whistled for eight fouls and one offsides penalty, while the Terriers committed seven fouls.
Upstate returns to action on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they host Francis Marion at County University Soccer Stadium.
