U.S. U17 WNT heads to Florida, Mexico
CHICAGO (Nov. 3, 2017) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team will hold a training camp from Nov. 11 to 19 that will be split between Sunrise, Florida and Mexico City.
The USA will come together in Florida for a few days of training before traveling to Mexico on Nov. 14, where it will train for one more day and then play the Mexico U-17 WNT in two internationals over three days. Both games – on Nov. 16 and Nov. 18 – will be at Mexico’s National Training Center and will serve as excellent preparation for both teams ahead of the 2018 CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship. The continental championship will be held in Nicaragua next spring and will qualify three teams for the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay.
U.S. U-17 WNT head coach Mark Carr has called up 22 players coming off a 28-player training camp in Chula Vista, Calif. at the end of October. The roster includes all four players in the current pool who have reached double figures in U-17 caps. All four participated in the previous cycle, as defender Kate Wiesner (21 caps), defender Kennedy Wesley (20), forward Jordan Canniff (16) and forward Lia Godfrey (10) were all members of the USA’s 2016 U-17 Women’s World Cup team in Jordan.
The U-17s have been quite active this year as they prepare for qualifying. The squad has played tournaments in Slovenia/Italy and China while also defeating England twice in Portland, Oregon by a 12-3 aggregate score in late August. The U-17s have lost just one of nine international games this year, a wild July back-and-forth 5-4 setback against China in Weifang.
The age cutoff for the next U-17 Women’s World Cup is players born on or after January 1, 2001. Carr named 19 players born 2001 and three born in 2002 for this event.
