Utah Valley drops 5-1 decision at Arizona
TUCSON, Arizona—The Utah Valley University women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in a 5-1 setback to 20th-ranked Arizona Sunday night at Mulcahy Stadium.
The Wolverines return home from their season-opening road trip in Arizona with a 1-1 record as the team defeated Northern Arizona on Friday night. With Sunday night's win, Arizona evens its record at 1-1.
"It was a disappointing result," Utah Valley head coach Brent Anderson said. "We started off slow tonight but managed to limit Arizona's first half chances. After starting the second half very poorly, we finally started to play the game, connecting and getting forward, creating many more chances in the second half. I was more pleased with the way the team finished the game."
The Wildcats first got on the scoreboard in the 19th minute and went into halftime with a 1-0 advantage over UVU. Arizona then scored four goals in the second half to secure the victory.
Utah Valley's Alexis Peterson would deny Arizona the shutout as she put a ball in the back of the net in the 90th minute to put the Wolverines on the scoreboard.
Arizona out-shot UVU 19-9, including an 11-2 advantage on goal. Breanna DeWaal led the Wolverines with a team-best three shots, including one on goal.
Sarah Davis and Brooklyn Nielsen split time in goal for UVU with each collecting three saves on the night.
Utah Valley will now host its home opener at Clyde Field on Friday, Aug. 26 against in-state rival Southern Utah. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. MT
