Utah Valley picks up 2-1 win over HBU
WAIPAHU, Hawaii—Breanna DeWaal scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute to lead the Utah Valley University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Houston Baptist on Sunday evening at the OHANA Hotels by Outrigger Shootout at Waipaio Peninsula Stadium.
With the win, Utah Valley evens its record at 1-1-0 as the Wolverines split its two matches at the Outrigger Shootout this weekend. The win also marks the first career victory for UVU head coach Chris Lemay.
"Overall it was a fantastic weekend for us," said Lemay. "We played really well on Friday in a loss and got a great result today. The overtime match on Friday night took a lot out of us and we were a step behind today, but still created a lot of good opportunities. We're happy to get our first win of the season as we continue to build and get better every day."
Utah Valley got on the scoreboard with just 21 seconds remaining in the first half after Doriana Moul received a slip pass from Amanda Marshall and fired a low shot to the left corner of the net to help the Wolverines take a 1-0 lead into the half. The goal marks Moul's first goal of the season and her first as a Wolverine.
Amber Tripp took the ball around the corner on the left side and played it toward the middle of the box in the 72nd minute. Moul received the ball and dummied it towards DeWaal, who then kicked it off the post and into the back of the net to give the Wolverines a 2-0 cushion.
Houston Baptist (0-2-0) scored its lone goal of the match in the 79th minute after UVU was called for a foul in the box, giving the Huskies a penalty kick. HBU's Ellee Hall converted on the penalty kick to cut the UVU lead to a 2-1 advantage.
Utah Valley controlled the match, out-shooting Houston Baptist 22-5. The Wolverines also registered 12 shots on goal to HBU's one. Sydney Fitzpatrick and DeWaal led UVU with four shots each. Fitzpatrick and DeWaal also led UVU with three shots apiece on goal. Moul fired three shots, including two on goal. Tori Smith, Alexis Peterson, and Sheridan Fox each had two shots with one on goal.
Brooklyn Nielsen was credited with the win in the box for UVU. Nielsen played 73:58 without giving up a goal. Sarah Davis played the final 16:02 in the box for the Wolverines. Hannah Bruce came up strong defensively for the Wolverines, playing nearly every minute of the match on the backline.
DeWaal, Moul, and Tori Smith were named to the OHANA Hotels by Outrigger Shootout All Tournament team.
