BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women’s soccer team opened its inaugural season with a 2-0 victory over the Southern University Jaguars on Friday at A.W. Mumford Stadium.
The Broncs become the fourth program in school history among the eight that count team wins and losses to win their first-ever match as an NCAA Division I program. The other three are men’s and women's tennis and volleyball.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Broncs (1-0-0) attempt just two shots on goal, freshman Andreya Barrera scored on her first of three shots on goal, recording the first goal in program history at the 51:21 mark.
The Broncs continued to apply the pressure during the second half, and at the 73:42 mark, freshman Zinnia Hannig drew Jaguars (0-1-0) goalkeeper Sarah Forde (0-1-0) out of the net and then sent a cross to freshman Aimie Inthoulay to put the Broncs up 2-0.
The Broncs ended up with nine of their 11 shots on goal in the second half.
That made a winner of freshman goalkeeper Aubrie Coley (1-0-0), who made six saves for the shutout.
The Broncs outshot the Jaguars 17-10 and led in corner kicks 5-1. The Broncs also committed fewer fouls, 7-3, and went offside fewer times, 3-2.
Jessica Persico was the most aggressive attacker for the Jaguars, sending three of her five shots towards the net.
The Broncs complete this road trip on Sunday at 12 p.m. at 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Jackson State.
