UVU announces men's soccer signing class
Six new recruits have signed National Letters of Intent to play men's soccer at Utah Valley University, head coach Greg Maas announced Wednesday. Three of the recruits will be on campus this fall, with the other three serving LDS missions prior to enrolling at UVU.
The list is headed by Aaron Meyer (Carrollton, Texas), the No. 7-rated high school player in the country (College Soccer News) and former U.S. U-17 Men's National Team member. Also signing with the Wolverines are Conner Dearden (Cottonwood Heights, Utah), Leo Fuchs (Lehi, Utah), Blake Leonetti (Oregon City, Ore.), Donnett Sackie (Liberia, West Africa) and Caleb Wight (Pleasant View, Utah).
"It's a great time to be a Wolverine, and I couldn't be more pleased with this talented and regarded class of student-athletes," Maas said. "This year's group includes top-level local players, to a player as far-reaching as Liberia, West Africa. Each of these young men will not just add further depth to an already exciting team, but I am very confident that they will fight for playing time right from the onset."
Meyer, a midfielder, is a member of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) for FC Dallas and is the No. 28-rated player in the IMG Academy 150 on TopDrawerSoccer.com.
Dearden, who will serve an LDS mission prior to playing at UVU, is a Region IV '97 Olympic Development Program (ODP) team selection and the lone goalkeeper among the signings. He played club soccer for Sparta United.
Fuchs, who led Lehi High School to a Utah State Championship, also played on the Region IV '97 ODP team and the USSDA for Real Salt Lake. He played club soccer for Utah FC and is expected to be a midfielder for the Wolverines after serving an LDS mission.
Leonetti, a midfielder, prepped at Oregon City High School and was an All-State selection and two-time All-League player. He was also a member of the Portland Timbers in the USSDA.
Sackie, a forward, scored 21 goals in just nine games in his final season at Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, where he was an All-State selection.
Wight rounds out the list and will go on an LDS mission after finishing at Weber High School. A midfielder, he participated with the Region IV '97 ODP team and like Dearden, also played for Sparta United.
