Vaughn’s Golden Goal Sends DU Past TCU, 2-1
DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer team defeated TCU 2-1 on a 99th-minute golden goal from senior forward Kalie Vaughn (Fort Collins, Colo.) on Friday evening at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
"I thought we did a great job in the first half of finding space and controlling the pace of the game," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "They put 10 players behind the ball and made it difficult for us at times. When we played two-touch and moved off the ball we broke them down pretty well."
The Pioneers (7-1-2) opened the scoring in the 12th minute when senior forward Katy Van Lieshout (Boulder, Colo.) played a pass from the left flank to senior forward Kaitlin Bast (Centennial, Colo.) at the top of the box. Bast proceeded to fire the ball past the goalkeeper to give DU an early 1-0 lead. The breakthrough moved Bast into sole possession of sixth place on both DU's all-time points and all-time goals lists, with 83 and 33, respectively.
The Horned Frogs (5-4-1) struck back in the 49th minute after a scrum in the Denver penalty area left the ball at the feet of TCU's Makenzie Koch deep in the box. Koch played a pass back to Brittany Slyman, who put the ball into the net from 15-yards out to level the score at one.
Denver ended the match in the ninth minute of overtime, when sophomore midfielderNikki Pappalardo (San Diego, Calif.) played a low cross from the right side to the feet of Vaughn. Vaughn fired the ball into the net from close range to give the Crimson and Gold the full three points.
Denver outshot TCU 29-11 in the contest, and held a 6-2 advantage in corners. The Pioneers moved to 2-0-1 against teams in the Big12, and stretched their unbeaten streak to nine matches.
Denver will close out nonconference action at Portland on Sunday at 2 p.m. MT.
