Villanova Edges Women’s Soccer in Overtime
Bri Austin scored her second goal of the afternoon just 2:12 into the first extra session as Villanova defeated Siena Women’s Soccer 2-1 in overtime in Pennsylvania. Jayanna Monds scored for the Saints, while Taylor Dorado made eight saves.
Villanova (6-3) out-shot Siena (3-4-2, 0-0-1) 27-3 and held an 8-2 margin in corners, but was forced to chase an early deficit as the Saints took advantage of their first opportunity of the match.
Just 3:53 in, Monds staked Siena to an early lead on the road against a formidable Big East opponent. Darby D’Angelo played in a corner kick to Julianna Kissane who passed back to D’Angelo. The sophomore then set up Monds who finished in traffic in close for her team-leading second goal of the season. The Saints’ first seven goals of 2018 had previously come from seven different goal scorers.
Siena registered its three shots – all of which were on target – over the first 13:06 of the match, as the Wildcats attempted the final 25 shots while holding the Saints without an attempt for the last 79:06.
Villanova was awarded a penalty kick in the 32nd minute with Austin finishing the attempt to level the match. The Wildcats then out-shot Siena 16-0 in the second half, but Dorado made seven of her stops in the stanza to force the match into overtime. The junior had previously been named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day for the fifth time in her career, tying the program record set by Laura Ettinger ’12.
But in the 92nd minute, Niki Molina found Austin in close who finished the golden goal as the Saints came up just short despite another valiant effort vs. a Big East program. Siena defeated Seton Hall 1-0 in the season opener.
The Saints wrap up their non-conference schedule Thursday night with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Vermont.
