Virginia Bounces UNC From ACC Tournament
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Caroline Miller scored 10 minutes into the match and the score held up for 10th-ranked Virginia as it beat eight-ranked North Carolina 1-0 in the 2012 ACC Tournament quarterfinals at Fetzer Field Sunday afternoon.
Virginia advances to the ACC Tournament semifinals and will play top-seeded Florida State Friday on Friday at 5 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The victory boosts Virginia to 14-4-1 on the season. Carolina dropped to 10-5-2 on the campaign.
The Tar Heels will now have two weeks off before hosting a first round NCAA Tournament match the second weekend in October. NCAA Tournament bids and seedings will be announced a week from Monday. The NCAA selection show will air on NCAA.com on Monday, November 5 at 4:30 p.m.
The winning goal for the Cavaliers came at 10:01 of the match as Caroline Miller scored her 14th goal of the season and her third this year against the Tar Heels. She took a through ball from Morgan Brian, eluded UNC goalkeeper Adelaide Gay and finished into an empty net. That score would hold up for the victory. The Cavaliers had several more good opportunities to score in the game but Gay made three saves to keep the Wahoos from denting the scoreboard a second time.
Virginia outshot the Tar Heels 11-4. The four shots were the fewest ever taken in a game by the Tar Heels in the program history dating back to 1979. UNC failed to put a show on goal in the game as Virginia goalkeeper Danielle DeLisle was not forced to make a save.
This marked the second straight season in which the Tar Heels have lost in the ACC quarterfinal round on their home field. A year ago, Carolina fell to Florida State in the quarterfinal round 1-0 in double overtime. UNC is now 58-2-4 in ACC Tournament action all-time dating back to 1988. On the previous four occasions when UNC did not win the championship, the eventual winner was the team that knocked Carolina out of the tournament — NC State in 1988, Virginia in 2004, Wake Forest in 2010 and Florida State in 2011.
