No. 3 Virginia Edges No. 25 ODU 1-0 In Overtime
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA- Ryan Zinkhan's goal 1:46 into the first sudden death overtime period lifted the third ranked Cavaliers of Virginia to a 1-0 victory over 25th ranked Old Dominion Friday night at Klickner Stadium. This was the season opener for both teams.
"It was a bit of a mistery for us coming into tonight's match with so many new faces, but I thought at the end of the night, I was so very, very proud of the team. We showed a lot of character, guts and courage. We worked with each other and had chances to win the game. We came away from this with a lot of positives. You are never happy to lose a match, but coming into Klockner Stadium with a big crowd against the number three team in the country,I am very proud with the performance." - Head Coach Alan Dawson.
The Monarchs had five of their seven corner kicks in the first half. In the second half Sidney Rivera's header off Geoffrey Hill's corner just missed the net with 9:10 left in regulation.
Virginia outshot ODU, 20-9 overall and 11-2 in shots on goal. Junior Josue Henriquez and graduate student Christian Schoerer had both of the Monarchs shots on goal. Sophomore goal keeper Alex Tiesenhausen came up with a game hight 10 saves.
ODU will host 22nd ranked North Carolina next Friday at the ODU Soccer Complex in the Stihl Soccer Classic.
