Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's soccer team (1-1) cruised past the Delaware State (0-2) in the Seahawks' home opener on Sunday afternoon, downing the Hornets 5-0 at Hameline Field.

Senior goalkeeper, Delaney Beck, made her season debut in goal for the Seahawks, working a clean, 90 minute sheet in recording her third career shutout. The Bakersfield, CA native faced five shots while making two saves on the afternoon.
For the second straight contest, Wagner opened up the scoring. In the 14th minute, junior midfielder Julia Fitzsimmons corralled the rebound off a Delaware State player and was able to put one past DSU's goalkeeper, Franchesska Ramirez, to put the home eleven ahead early.
Wagner nearly went up by two goals in the 20th minute, as senior defender Autumn Clark lofted the free kick that found the foot of newcomer, Annie White, as White booted the ball on target but was denied by Ramirez.
In the 32nd minute, graduate Mariana Jaramillo, playing in front of the home faithful for the first time, was able to put on net, but Ramirez, was able to stand her ground and deny the scoring chance, keeping it a one score game.
Wagner went into the intermission leading 1-0 after outshooting Delaware State, 7-3, in the opening stanza.
The Seahawks wasted little time as play resumed. In the 50th minute, Nunez notched the first of her two goals as the East Greenwich, RI native blasted the free kick opportunity past Ramirez, giving Wagner a 2-0 lead. For Nunez, it marked her ninth career score in a Seahawk uniform.
The Green & White struck again in the 61st, going up by a 3-0 count. Sophomore forward Luisa Barone had the net to herself along the left side and floated a chance at the goal. DSU's Alexis Utain tried to clear it away, but her momentum carried the ball into her team's net.
Barone made good on her chance in the 68th minute, putting the home team up 4-0. Junior Madison Starr sent the free kick into the box. The second-year Parsippany, NJ native was able to out jump the defense and head the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season and second of her career.
For Starr, it was her second career assists in her 32 career contest on Grymes Hill.
Nunez put the game out-of-reach with her second tally of the afternoon, going one-on-one against Ramirez and firing a low ball to the right of the keeper.
This marked the first time Nunez has had multiple goals in a contest and is the first time a Seahawk player accomplished the feat since teammates Sydney McNutt and Megan Fritz each had two goals in a 5-3 victory on the road at Long Island University, back on September 30, 2016.
Lynette Urena and Ashley Ventura each had a shot on a goal for the Hornets while Ramirez finished with six save while playing the full 90 minutes.
Wagner begins the second week of the 2019 season with two more home games, as the Green & White welcomes Fairfield for a 7:00 p.m. matchup on Friday, August 30 and conclude the three-game homestand on Sunday, September 1 with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against Rhode Island.
