Wagner Drops 2-0 Decision To SFU
Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Northeast Conference (NEC) opponent Saint Francis U on Sunday afternoon at Hameline Field.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 3-8-3 on the year and 0-3-1 in NEC play, while the Red Flash improves to 7-7-1 on the season.
The Seahawks had two attempts in the first half to find the back of the net. Freshman Mya Donnelly(Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) put herself into a promising scoring position, but her shot from 15 yards away was saved 11 minutes into the contest. Eight minutes later, Donnelly fed classmate Madison Starr (New Canaan, CT / New Canaan) with a through ball, but the first-year Seahawk missed high with her contested shot.
The visitors struck five minutes into the contest, as an unassisted strike from Mariana Jaleca gave the Red Flash a 1-0 halftime lead.
In the second period, freshman Julia Fitzsimmons (Point Pleasant, NJ / Point Pleasant) had the first opportunity for the Seahawks, but her shot sailed high. First-year. Starr as well as sophomores Kaitlyn Ross (Sayville, NY / Sayville), Autumn Clark (Fort Lauderdale, FL / Pine Crest Prep) and Maria Nunez(East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) also had shots for the Green and White in the second period, but could not capitalize.
The Red Flash doubled its lead in the 57th minute, as Alyssa McGhee converted a Sara Suler feed for the 2-0 lead, which also proved to be the final score.
Starr led Wagner with three attempts, while Fitzsimmons contributed two shots on the afternoon. In goal, sophomore Delaney Beck (Bakersfield, CA / Garces Memorial) led Wagner with seven saves on the afternoon, while junior Katie Viscardi (Hazlet, NJ / Mater Dei Prep) made four saves in the second half.
Up next, the Seahawks travel to Central Connecticut State on Friday night, October 20, for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
