Wagner Nets Two Second-Half Goal in Draw
Staten Island, N.Y. - Freshman Annie White and senior Maria Nunez netted goals in the second half as the Wagner women's soccer team and the Sacred Heart Pioneers played to a 2-2 draw Friday evening at Hameline Field. Wagner moved to 3-6-1 overall and 1-0-1 in Northeast Conference play, while the Pioneers moved to 4-4-2 and 1-0-1 in league play.
The Seahawks generated the first chance in the fourth minute, but Nunez's try was denied by Sacred Heart goalkeeper Elyssa Kipperman.
Sacred Heart, which outshot Wagner 8-4 in the first stanza, opened the scoring on a goal from Azria Malloy in the 10th minute. The visitors increased its advantage to 2-0 in the 20th minute after Michelle Clarkin found the back of the net.
SHU led 2-0 after 45 minutes of play.
Sacred Heart looked to add to its lead in the 46th minute. Desiree Crawford rang a penalty kick off the post.
Wagner made it a 2-1 match in the 57th minute. After a free kick, White found a loose ball inside the six-meter box and scored.
The Seahawks, who outshot the Pioneers 5-4 in the second frame, made a push to knot the score. With 30 seconds remaining, Nunez had a shot stopped from point-blank range. On the ensuing corner, the home team earned a penalty kick. With the ball on the spot, Nunez founded the upper-right hand corner of the net with eight seconds left to even the score, 2-2.
Nunez created Wagner's best chance of the extra sessions, but sent a free kick high in the 103rd minute.
Freshman Erin Kelly made three saves in the draw.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Friday evening at Hameline Field as they welcome Robert Motrris at 7:00 p.m.
