Warhawk Men Win Third Straight
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team defeated Fontbonne 3-0 in St. Louis, Missouri Sunday afternoon. The Warhawks, winners of three in a row, improve to 4-3-1 this season.
The Griffins put together the first solid attack of the day, resulting in a shot on goal that was saved by junior goalkeeper Toney Anderson (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's).
UW-W's Hozai Ceballos (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) seemed to get things going for the Warhawks offensively with a shot on goal in the 22nd minute. Despite the shot being saved, the Warhawks gained momentum, and two minutes later found themselves leading 1-0.
Ceballos crossed a ball into the box that Jack Wirth (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) headed in for his fourth goal of the season.
Two and a half minutes later Ceballos netted his own goal on an assist by Jalen Holley (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) to put the Warhawks up 2-0.
Anderson made two more critical saves as the half wore on before being replaced by Jason Purlee (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) in the 32nd minute.
Four minutes into the second half the Warhawks went ahead 3-0 when Kyle Clancy (Palatine, Ill./Palatine)and Jalen Holley (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) hooked up to find Ceballos for his second goal of the match and fifth in the last two games.
Fontbonne tested Purlee in the 64th minute, but the freshman made the save to preserve the shutout.
Forty-eight fouls were whistled in the match as the Warhawks registered over twenty shots for the third time this season.
UW-W will travel to Waverly, Iowa Wednesday for their next match at 5 p.m. against Wartburg.
