Warhawks Clinch First Ever WIAC Championship
For the first time in school history the UW-Whitewater women's soccer team won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship game. The Warhawks defeated UW-Stevens Point 1-0 Saturday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The Warhawks have been in the title game three straight years. The win means the Warhawks earn the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III national tournament.
The Pointers may have outshot the Warhawks 25-17, but Jessica Allemang (Wauwatosa/West) struck the only ball that counted. After a Pointer foul at 22:32, Allemang floated a free kick over the Pointer goalkeeper from about 25 yards out for the only tally of the game.
Stevens Point persisted with their pressure firing off fifteen second half shots but goalkeeper Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley)earned her seventh shutout of the season making a season-high fourteen saves.
The Warhawks, and first-year head coach Ryan Quamme, finish the regular season with a record of 15-4-1. The fifteen wins are the most in school history, one better than the previous record of 14 set in 2011. The Pointers fall to 13-6-1.
UW-W was the number one seed in the WIAC tournament after finishing the regular season with a league record of 8-0-0. After receiving a first round bye the Warhawks defeated UW-River Falls 2-0 in the semifinals. The match between UW-W and UW-SP in the WIAC title game is the second in three years. In 2010 the Pointers topped the Warhawks 1-0.
By sealing their own fate with the win all the Warhawks have left to do is find out who they play, when they play, and where they play.
