Warhawks' Duel with Augustana Ends in a Tie
One hundred and ten minutes was not enough time to determine a winner between the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team and Augustana (Ill.). The Warhawks and Vikings played to a scoreless tie in double-overtime Wednesday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
The match was the fourth time the two teams have played for the Viking-Warhawk Cup. Since Augustana won last season, they will retain the cup until next year when the teams meet again.
Although the Warhawks outshot the Vikings 14-9 in regulation, the amount of shots on goal for each team was the same, three.
The first overtime featured some more intense action, but possession was fairly balanced between the teams. The Warhawks did put three of their four shots on net, but were unable to capitalize.
In the second overtime period the Warhawks turned up the heat. UW-W tallied seven shots in the final ten minutes of play with Peter Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) having two of the best opportunities to score.
Raymonds ripped a shot on goal in the 107th minute, but the Viking keeper made the save. As time was winding down, Augustana was whistled for a foul just outside the box. Raymonds elected to take the free kick, but his shot sailed high just as time expired.
Raymonds led the team with seven shots, three on goal, while sophomore midfielder Kevin Mesich (West Allis, Wis./West Allis Hale) added three. Ten other UW-W players recorded at least one shot.
Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) made six saves for the Warhawks to tally his third solo shutout of the season.
UW-W will return to action on Sunday, October 8 when they travel to Northfield, Minnesota to take on St. Olaf in a match beginning at 1 p.m.
