Warhawks End Regular Season with Loss at UWP
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - A goal with less than six minutes to play spoiled the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team's final regular season game as they lost to UW-Platteville 3-2 Sunday. The Warhawks drop to 10-6-4 and will await the announcement of the 62-team field for the NCAA Division III Championship on Monday, November 6 at 12:30 p.m. to see if their season will continue. The Pioneers improve to 11-3-2 and win the Shaymus Guinn Cup for the second time in five years.
The Shaymus Guinn Cup was a cup created to honor Head Coach Tony Guinn's son, Shaymus, who passed away in December 2012 at the age of 11 after a five-year battle against E-Wing Sarcoma and chemo-induced acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
Twin brothers, Henry and Peter Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East), connected on the game's first goal in the 26th minute. Henry found his brother for his team-leading 12th goal of the season to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
Moments before halftime the Pioneers scored, and the teams headed to halftime tied at one.
Peter Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) and Kyle Clancy (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had opportunities to give UW-W a lead in the second half, but the UW-P goalkeeper, Nate Miller, was positioned to make saves on both.
The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead with less than fifteen minutes to go, but the Warhawks answered three and a half minutes later to tie the match. Garrett Morgando (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) provided the Warhawk goal, his second of the season.
Playing a man down, UW-W gave up the game-winning goal with 5:08 remaining in the match.
