Warhawks Fend Off Saints for First Win
Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) scored her 28th career goal in the 9th minute of play Saturday to lead the Warhawks to a 2-0 victory over the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota. The Warhawks, ranked 20th in the nation and playing in the Advantage Emblem Cup hosted by St. Scholastica, move to 1-1 this season. The Saints drop to 1-2 with the loss.
The first seven minutes of play were slow until the Warhawks earned a corner kick.Adria Schueler (Wales, Wis./Mukwonago) sent a ball into the box that found the head of Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) but the shot was blocked and the game remained scoreless.
Just before the ten-minute mark, Morgan Beaty (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) found Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) for the Warhawks' first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. Reid, a junior, is now in eighth place in the UW-Whitewater record book for career goals.
Erin Doody (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) was tested in goal in the 24th minute when Taylor Rozmark of the Saints put a shot on goal that Doody stopped.
Two minutes later at the other end of the field, the Warhawks' Larissa Dooley (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) knocked one past the keeper on a pass from Karina Rosales(Batavia, Ill./Batavia) for a 2-0 lead.
Dooley almost made it 3-0 in the 27th minute with a header, but it sailed just wide of the goal.
Both teams made substitutions late in the first half, but neither team was able to generate any offense with the fresh legs.
The Saints came out of the half and put some pressure on the Warhawks after earning a corner in the 49th minute. A cross into the box found the head of Kirsten Olsen, but it sailed wide of the net and the Warhawks held on to their 2-0 lead.
Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) gave her best effort to make it 3-0 in the 62nd minute, but Saints' keeper Kelsey Reeves made the save.
Doody kept her two goal cushion by making her only other save in the game in the 70th minute and the Warhawks went on to win.
UW-Whitewater outshot St. Scholatsica 11-3 in the match including 3-2 in shots on goal. The Warhawks also earned more corner kicks than the Saints, 7-1.
Head coach Ryan Quamme and his team will look to win the Advantage Emblem Cup tomorrow in their next match against Concordia-Moorhead at 2 pm.
