Warhawks Lose Heart-Breaker to Titans
Playing in their final regular season game, along with keeping their hopes of a sixth straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title alive, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team lost to UW-Oshkosh in heart-breaking fashion Wednesday night. The Titans recorded an "own goal" in the second overtime to defeat the Warhawks 2-1 at J.J. Keller Field in Oshkosh.
The Warhawks relinquished an early goal to the Titans and had to fight hard to even the score.
Shots in the 11th, 15th, 20th, 22nd and 24th minutes kept the pressure on the Titan defense, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Karina Rosales (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) had two opportunities for a goal late in the half. Her first attempt came in the 37th minute, but the shot sailed wide. Three minutes later she fired a shot on goal that was saved by UW-O goalkeeper Nina Muzi.
Payton DeLuga (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) gave her best effort to even the score just 1:37 into the second half, but Muzi was again there to make the stop for the Titans.
UW-W finally tied the match in the 55th minute when Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) foundMarie Lesperance (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) five yards in front of the net for a goal.
It seemed that the Warhawks had the momentum through the remainder of regulation, but Muzi kept stepping up to make saves for the Titans. Muzi turned away shots by Reid, Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and Rosales in the last 15 minutes of regulation to preserve the tie and force overtime.
The first overtime period was low key as neither team recorded a shot.
Overtime number two was quiet until the fifth minute of play. A Shot by Titan forward Alek Kleis hit the crossbar, but took an unfortunate bounce for the Warhawks and was mistakenly knocked into the goal to end the game.
The loss prevents the Warhawks from the ability to win the WIAC regular season title. The Titans will play UW-La Crosse Saturday for the league title and to determine seeding in the WIAC tournament. The Warhawks, 14-4 overall and 5-2 in the WIAC, will likely be a three seed and host a first round game next Tuesday at 6 pm at Fiskum Field. The winner of the WIAC tournament receives the league's automatic bid into the NCAA DIII tournament.
