Warhawks Shutout Dutch
Matt Klug scored in the 42nd minute of play to lead the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Central College in Pella, Iowa Friday. The goal is the second of the sophomore forward's collegiate career.
The Warhawks put on some early pressure firing off two shots in the first ten minutes, but both were blocked by a Dutch defender. Central responded with a shot on goal at 21:19 but Josh Rohde made the first of his two saves in the game.
At the other end of the field the Warhawks were knocking on the door when Justin Stanko fired a shot on goal at 22:58, but it was stopped by the Dutch keeper. The Warhawks continued to pressure the defense and finally broke through with Klug's goal at 41:13.
With 34 seconds left in the half Rohde made another save to preserve the lead and keep the momentum from shifting as the teams headed into the half. The Warhawks outshot the Dutch 13-6 in the first half.
UW-Whitewater continued to attack in the second half but placed an effort on possession. The Warhawks fired off six more shots but only one was on target. The Dutch shot five times in the second half, just one was on goal, and it was saved by substitute goalkeeper Alex Buchman.
This is the second consecutive shutout for the Warhawks who have not lost a game since their opening match against 3rd ranked Loras College.
The Warhawks (4-1-1) will travel to Indianola, Iowa on Sunday for a match against Simpson College beginning at 1 pm.
