Warhawks Shutout Viterbo
Behind a season-high eight saves from sophomore goalkeeper Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North), the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated Viterbo University 2-0 Wednesday evening to improve to 10-2-3 this season. Viterbo, an NAIA school that offers athletic scholarships, falls to 4-7-3.
Freshman forward Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere)gave the Warhawks a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, scoring her team-leading seventh goal of the season on a pass from freshman midfielder Jenel Karow (Franklin, Wis./Franklin).
Yonan came up big for the Warhawks in the first half, making several key saves, two in near one-on-one situations. Yonan totaled six saves in the first 45 minutes.
Six minutes into the second half the Warhawks earned a corner. Adria Schueler (Wales, Wis./Mukwonago)elected to take it and sent it on the ground back to Devon Polk (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) who was outside the box on the near side of the field. Polk corralled the ball about 25 yards from the goal and hit a shot into the backside of the net, over the goalie's head for her first goal of the season and a 2-0 Warhawk lead.
Yonan and the Warhawk defense fended off the V-Hawks in the second half, holding them to just two shots on goal, both of which Yonan stopped.
The shutout is the seventh of the season for UW-W and second this year for Yonan.
The Warhawks will return to league play on Saturday, October 21 when they host No. 19 UW-La Crosse at 1 p.m. at Fiskum Field. The Eagles are in first place in the league standings with a record of 5-0 while the Warhawks are tied for third with a WIAC record of 2-1-1.
