Warhawks Soar Past Cardinals
Two goals in each half propelled the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over North Central College Sunday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The win is the third in a row for the Warhawks who played the first four games of their season in nine days. Head Coach Ryan Quamme commented, "We played a lot of games in a nine day stretch and I'm happy to get the results we did."
UW-Whitewater wasted little time with their attack. The Warhawks notched six corner kicks and five shots in the first twelve minutes of play. The Warhawks dominated possession in the first half and finally tallied a goal in the 26th minute when Carina Krausert found Carly Pottle for an early lead. Less than four minutes later Morgan Beaty put one past the keeper on a corner kick by Ruth Lenzen to give the Warhawks a 2-0 lead heading into the half.
Just 40 seconds into the second half the Warhawks were knocking on the door again as Brianna Reid sent one over the goal. Three and half minutes later Reid connected on a cross from Carly Pottle to give the Warhawks a 3-0 advantage.
North Central dialed up their offensive pressure a notch in the second half and managed to sneak one past goalkeeper Jordan Myers to inch closer at 3-1, but Reid answered the call again in the 74th minute. Sarah Sedlar corralled a loose ball and passed to Morgan Beaty who crossed the ball to Reid for a slick goal and a 4-1 Warhawk lead.
Besides the one hiccup, Jordan Myers and the Warhawk defense were solid. Myers made five saves in 78 and a half minutes to earn the win and improve to 3-1 this season. Emily Haeger played the final eleven and a half minutes but never faced a shot on goal. Kelsey Beld, a senior defender, was the only Warhawk to play the entire game. Coach Quamme commented on his senior's presence on the field, "She is a good leader and has been back there for four years as a starter. She provides us with structure back there and is doing very well."
The Warhawks racked up 16 corner kicks in the game and have now earned 45 corners this season to their opponents' nine.
Reid leads the team with three goals and six points this season. Carly Pottle and Marie Lesperance are right behind her with two goals and an assist apiece.
The Warhawks (3-1) will travel to Milwaukee, Wis. on Wednesday, September 10th for their first road game. UW-Whitewater will face-off against the Milwaukee School of Engineering in a match beginning at 7 pm at Viets Field.
