Warhawks Suffer Home Setback
Playing in 20 to 25 mile an hour winds for most of the match, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback at home against Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe UW-Oshkosh Wednesday night.
UW-W is now 6-6-1 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Titans move to 4-6-1 overall and 1-1 in the WIAC.
With the wind at their backs the first half, the Warhawks outshot the Titans 13-2 and registered eight corners to UW-O's one.
Both teams tallied two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of play, but neither mounted a truly threatening attack.
The second half was a drastically different story.
The Titans came out of the break with scoring on their minds, tallying six shots on goal in the first 11 minutes of the second period. Junior goalkeeper Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) was positioned to make each stop and keep the game scoreless.
Going into the wind, the Warhawks found much more success at attacking than the Titans did, putting six shots on goal in the second 45 minutes of play.
However, the Titans finally broke on to the scoreboard in the 81st minute when a shot from 18 yards out hit the crossbar and bounced into the net with some backspin.
UW-W made a furious attempt to tie the match, but a shot on goal in the 86th minute was stopped by a Titan defender just before crossing the goal line. The ensuing rebound veered just wide of the net.
The Titans added a goal in the final seconds of the match to push the final score to 2-0.
Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) made eight saves in the match, her second highest total this season.
The Warhawks will continue conference play in their next match on Saturday at 7 p.m. at UW-La Crosse.
