Warhawks' Three Match Win Streak Snapped
After surrendering a late second half goal, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team fell to No. 20 North Park University 1-0 Wednesday evening at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
The loss drops the Warhawks' to 7-5-1 and ends a three-match win streak. The Vikings improve to 12-2.
North Park maintained much of the possession in the first half, but the Warhawks managed to outshoot the visiting Vikings 4-2.
Joey Pumo (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) registered two of the Warhawks' first half shots, his first coming in the ninth minute, but the Viking keeper Mathias Stulen made the save.
Pumo's second shot looked promising, but it ricocheted off the crossbar and out of the box.
The second half started with more pace than the first, with the team's combining for five shots in the first 15 minutes.
The Vikings had the best opportunity to score early in the half with a pair of shots at close range in the 56th minute. The first hit the crossbar and the ensuing shot off the rebound was saved by Jake King(McHenry, Ill./McHenry West).
Twenty minutes later a North Park header off of a cross from the right side of the field found the back of the net.
UW-W, playing their second match in two days, did not relent.
Kevin Mesich (West Allis, Wis./West Allis Hale) saw a golden opportunity snuffed out by a well-positioned defender in the 84th minute, and two minutes after that, Henry Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) aimed a header to the far post, but the Viking keeper was able to make the save.
Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) made five saves for the Warhawks, but suffered his first loss of the season and is now 5-1.
The Warhawks return to action on Saturday, October 20 when they host Wheaton (Ill.), 8-4-1, at 7 p.m. at Fiskum Field.
