Warhawks Top WashU 1-0 in 2OT
Isaac Monson (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) picked a perfect time to score his first goal of the season, scoring the only goal of the game in the 106th minute as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team defeated Washington-St. Louis 1-0 Sunday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The match is the last of the regular season for the Warhawks who stand at 13-4-3. The Bears, ranked 22nd in the nation, fall to 9-3-1.
UW-W's best chance in the first half came in the 31st minute. Jordan Kayser (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) sent a corner into the box, but a Michael Salm (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) header was blocked and the ensuing shot was saved by the Bears' keeper Nick Tannenbaum.
WashU tested Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) early in the second half, but the Warhawk keeper was right where he needed to be, making three saves in the first 13 minutes.
The Bears almost found the back of the net in the final minute of play, but a Warhawk defender turned away a shot by Ryan Sproule and the match headed to overtime.
In the second overtime period UW-W earned a throw-in in their attacking zone. Salm launched a toss towards the box that ricocheted off Brian Zimdars (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy) and then to Monson, who finished the goal and the game.
Lucatorto finished the match with five saves to earn his second consecutive shutout and fifth of the season.
Sunday was also senior day for the Warhawks. Head Coach Tony Guinn recognized Jordan Kayser(Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn), Owen Thompson(Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls), Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North), Chris Roche (Manchester, England/Sale) and Salm after the match.
"This was a great win over a very good team. It was a great win for our seniors" Guinn added after the game.
UW-W will now wait until November 7 when the announcement of the 61-team field for the NCAA Tournament is made. Since the Warhawks do not belong to a conference, they will need to earn either a Pool B or C bid, thus relying on the tournament selection committee to choose them for the tournament. The Warhawks are seeking their third straight tournament appearance and 13th in program history
