Warhawks Topple Ranked Titans
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team topped 25th ranked Illinois Wesleyan 1-0 Wednesday night under the lights at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. This is just the second loss of the season for the Titans who also lost their season opener to Ohio Northern 1-0.
To say the Titans have a high octane offense might be an understatement. Heading into Wednesday's match the Titans had tallied 133 shots in six games compared to the Warhawks' 86 in that same span. They had scored 24 goals to UW-Whitewater's 11, and they had only given up 6 goals to the Warhawks' 5.
None of that mattered on Wednesday night.
Seven minutes and twenty-five seconds into the game Brianna Reid made a move on a defender and ripped the ball into the upper right corner of the net to give UW-Whitewater a 1-0 lead. The next 82:35 was scoreless.
The Warhawks' senior goalkeeper Jordan Myers did her part making three key saves in the game. She also got a lot of help from the defense in front of her. The backline for the Warhawks kept the Titans from getting quality shots. Only three of their twelve shots in the game were on goal; an impressive feat against a quality opponent.
This is the Warhawks' third shutout of the season and second in a row.
Head Coach Ryan Quamme was proud of his team after the game, stating, "I thought that was the most complete 90 minutes we have played. Our team was very disciplined and stuck to the game plan tonight."
UW-Whitewater (5-2) will open Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a match beginning at 6 pm at Fiskum Field.
