Warhawks Upended by No. 24 Carthage
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team fell to No. 24 Carthage College 2-1 Thursday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
The Warhawks nearly scored in the first minute of play but a header by Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) was saved by the Red Men keeper.
Carthage countered with a strong attack. GoalkeeperChris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) made three saves in the first eight minutes of play.
Lucatorto continued to stand up to the challenge, totaling six first half saves as the teams headed into halftime tied 0-0.
A foul in the penalty box on the Warhawks six minutes into the second half resulted in a penalty kick for the Red Men. Austin Bitta capitalized for a 1-0 lead.
Stanko had another opportunity at a goal in the 71st minute, but his header was denied.
Carthage took a 2-0 lead with a goal in the 88th minute, but had their lead cut in half after a successful penalty kick by UW-W's Jordan Kayser (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) with 15 seconds left in the match.
Lucatorto made eight saves in the match as the Warhawks were outshot 25-15.
The Warhawks, 3-2-2, will travel to Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois for their next match on Saturday at 7 p.m.
