Washington's Path to Men’s College Cup

For Washington, this season can best be summarized by Robert Frost’s poem, The Road Not Taken. “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” Both literally and figuratively, the Huskies have taken an unconventional path to the College Cup.

Starting with the literal: as a lower seed in the NCAA tournament and a Big Ten program all the way on the West Coast, the program has had to rack up the travel miles. Consider this: on October 31st, the team flew across the country to play Maryland for a regular-season match, then flew back to play UCLA at home. Just 12 days later, the Huskies again flew to Maryland to partake in the Big Ten tournament, losing in the first round. They returned home to begin an NCAA tournament journey that started with a short trip to Oregon State, then a flight to SMU in Texas, another to Stanford in California, and then again to Maryland for the Elite Eight game.

Then, in the figurative sense, head coach Jamie Clark has built his College Cup roster with an old-school formula of mainly recruiting regionally and domestically. 20 of the 29 players on the roster are from Washington, by far the highest in-state percentage of any College Cup team. And with 28 of the 29 hailing from the United States, the Huskies also have the fewest international players (1) of any of the four remaining teams.

Now two games away from what would be the program’s first-ever national title, Clark will hope the callus built from that far less traveled road will provide the fortitude needed to win it all.
