Women’s Soccer: Waves Blank Wright State 1-0
Lynn Williams Records First Goal of the Season in Dramatic Fashion
August 29, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine posted its first shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory against Wright State behind a strong defensive effort from its young squad and a tremendous goal from Lynn Williams. The Waves (1-0-1) dominated play for much of the game, but the Raiders (1-1-1) put up a fight on a beautiful Thursday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.
Despite a dominant 17-6 shot advantage, the contest remained scoreless deep into the game. Then Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) put the Waves on the board in dramatic fashion. The 2013 MAC Hermann Watch List selection took a feed from teammate Michelle Pao (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista HS) near midfield, shook two defenders and fired a rocket from 25 yards to the near post in the 76th minute.
It was the first strike of the season for Williams and the sixth game-winner of her standout career. Williams fired a match-high seven shots, four on target, while Ally Holtz (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou HS) added three, two on target.
After a slow start for both squads, Pepperdine upped the intensity in the second period, recording 12 attempts and allowing just three for the Raiders.
Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) earned her first career victory and inaugural shutout in her second collegiate start. Seabert made four saves in the contest. For the second consecutive match, Pepperdine started four freshman and eight first-year Waves saw action. Brooke McCurdy (1-1-1) suffered the loss for WSU and collected nine saves.
Pepperdine opens up a challenging four-match road trip Sunday, Sept. 1 when it takes on No. 19 Texas A&M in College Station. Kick off against the Aggies is set for 11:30 a.m. (PT) at Ellis Field.
