MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine put together a strong performance, but could not derail No. 4 UCLA, dropping a 2-0 decision Friday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field. Playing its fifth top-25 opponent in eight matches, the Waves (4-3-1) could not bounce back from an early strike by the Bruins (7-1-0).
Darian Jenkins opened the scoring in the 10th minute off a feed from Sarah Killion. From there the two squads battled to a standstill before an unfortunate own goal in the 58th minute made it 2-0 UCLA.
“I thought we had good possession of the ball – better than we’ve had all year,” Pepperdine head coach Tim Ward said. “I was really proud of the way we won the ball and kept the ball. We created a few chances that were excellent too. We had a few looks and in a game like this, you’re not going to get a lot of them. So when you get a moment you’ve got to be razor sharp and we just weren’t. It’s a great game to build on. That is a very good team we played today.”
UCLA held a 17-9 shot advantage, including seven shots on target. The Waves countered with six shots on goal. All-American candidate Lynn Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) fired a match-high four shots, three of them on frame to pace Pepperdine. Katie Gallanes (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) and Colby Carson (Morgan Hill, Calif./Valley Christian HS) each recorded a pair of shots.
Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) collected five saves. Katelyn Rowland collected UCLA’s fifth shutout of the year and made six saves, including four in the opening period.
Pepperdine continues its six-match homestand when it welcomes Fresno State to Malibu Sunday, September 22. Match time against the Bulldogs is set for 1:00 p.m. at Tari Frahm Rokus Field in a contest featuring live video via WaveCasts on PepperdineSports.com.
