PROVO, Utah – Pepperdine played well defensively, but could not generate enough quality chances and dropped a 1-0 West Coast Conference match Thursday night at No. 25 Brigham Young. The Waves (6-5-2, 1-2-0 WCC) drop their second straight match and second overall against the Cougars (8-4-1, 2-1-0 WCC).
Pepperdine turned in a strong defensive effort and denied several dangerous opportunities by the Cougars – including a ball cleared off the goal line on a BYU corner kick opportunity. The Waves battled BYU to a standstill in the first half and generated several quality chances of their own, most coming in the early going. In the second half, the pendulum swung the other way as the Cougars seized control offensively, but could not crack a stout effort by Pepperdine’s backline.
After turning away 21 shots and 10 corner kicks, the Waves allowed a late goal to Niki Fernandes in the 84th minute and the Cougars held on from there to secure the victory.
Pepperdine managed a season-low six shots with five of them coming in the first 25 minutes of the contest. All-American candidate Lynn Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) fired a team-high three shots, one on goal, while Ally Holtz (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) added a pair of attempts.
Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) suffered the loss for the Waves on a busy day between the pipes. Seabert corralled nine saves on 22 shots. Erica Owens took the win for BYU and made a three saves in securing the shutout win.
Pepperdine completes its two-match WCC road trip Saturday in San Diego against USD. Match time against the Toreros is set for 6:00 p.m. (PT) in a match broadcast live via TheW.tv from Torero Stadium.
