Weekly Preview: Aug. 27 - Sept. 2
The Mount Union men's soccer team kicks off its 2012 season at the Capital/Fort Rapids Invitational this weekend (Aug. 31 - Sept. 2).
The season opener for the Purple Raiders is on Friday (Aug. 31) against Emory & Henry (Va.). Game time from Columbus, Ohio (Capital), is scheduled for 5 p.m. It is the first game of 2012 for both schools.
Last season, the Raiders put together its second straight 10-win season, finished fourth in the Ohio Athletic Conference and advanced to the semifinals of the OAC Tournament. Emory & Henry wrapped up its 2011 campaign with seven consecutive losses and were winless in the month of October.
Mount Union concludes the weekend with a Sunday evening (4 p.m.) match against Wittenberg University. Wittenberg defeated the Raiders last season in Springfield, Ohio, 2-1. The Tigers started the 2011 season off winners of four-of-eight (4-3-1) but lost eight of its last 10 matches to finish 6-11-1.
Capital University will provide live stats for the entire weekend.
Following Sunday's match against Wittenberg, the Raiders face the defending national champions, Ohio Wesleyan, on Sept. 7.
