Western Kentucky women lose to Tennessee
The match marks the first time the WKU Lady Toppers have dropped a season opener since the 2006 season. The three goals allowed in a single match is only the third time in three seasons the Lady Toppers have allowed more than two opponent goals. The match also marked the first time the two teams have met in competition, WKU now with a 0-1 record against the Lady Volunteers.
Tennessee started on the attack in the first period, controlling the ball in WKU's territory for much of the match. The Lady Volunteers found the scoresheet first after three minutes of play. The assist came from Tori Bailey as she worked the ball up the middle before passing off to Chelsea Hatcher in front of the goal for the score.
The Lady Volunteers hit the net again in the 21st minute. The assist from Kylie Bono passed to goal scorer Anna Fisher on the right side of the net for Tennessee's second goal.
WKU faced a tough defense, posting a lone shot on goal in the first period by sophomore forward Laura Ray in the eighth minute of play.
A strong offense by the Lady Volunteers continued into the second period with 12 shots and 23 in the match. Tennessee scored their third goal at 69:42 by Caroline Brown. The Lady Volunteers goalkeeper made one save in the match.
The Lady Toppers faced a tough battle against a strong defense with only two shots in the entire match as Laura Ray posted two shots and one on goal in the match. The second shot came in the second period.
WKU's junior goalkeeper Libby Stout faced an aggressive offense making three saves in the first period and two in the second for five saves. She opens the season with a 0-1 record. WKU now sits 0-1 on the opening night of the 2010 season.
