Wick Ties St. Francis 0-0
ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick came away with a goalless draw with St. Francis on Sunday in the final day of competition at the 40th Mayor’s Cup Tournament. The Hawks needed a 1-0 victory to claim a share of the cup title but couldn’t produce a goal in the end.
’Wick is now 1-1-2 on the season and unbeaten in its last three matches
The first half saw only a few chances on goal. Perhaps the Hawks’ top chance began with a Kit Tregear (Brighton, England/BHASVIC) service from the left side to the right to Jack Miller (Commack, NY/Commack). He played a ball back across in the box that looked destined for a Mike Rood (Conklin, NY/Susquehanna) drive on goal but his shot was blocked at the last second by a Red Flash defender.
Nick Hills (Garden Suburb, Australia/U. of Newcastle) had the first good look for the Hawks in the second half. He found space 22 yards from goal and unleashed a cracker but it was smothered by St. Francis keeper Andrew Garcia.
With under fifteen minutes left, ’Wick had another chance as Miller pounded a low drive from the right screaming through traffic in the box but it couldn’t find the foot of another Hawk and the game remained 0-0.
Hartwick generated its final chance of regulation with just over two minutes remaining. Marc Russell (Glasgow, Scotland/Woodfarm) started the play with a short pass to Jamie O’Grady (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk) in the middle of the field. O’Grady dribbled the ball and played it to the left side to Harry Morton (Napier, New Zealand/Te Aho O Te Kura Pounamu) who laid a pass off to Rood for a left-footed shot, but Garcia again would make the save.
Both teams had three shots in the two overtime periods but neither generated any significant chances and the game ended in a stalemate.
The Hawks outshot the Red Flash 14-11 in the game. Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) played all 110 minutes in goal for Hartwick. He earned the clean sheet, making four saves. Garcia also finished with four stops for the Red Flash.
Bucknell, a 1-0 double overtime winner over Northern Kentucky in the day’s opening game, would end up taking the tournament title. Jesse Klug, who scored the game-winner today and netted the game-tying goal against Hartwick Friday was named the Jim Lennox Offensive MVP. Bucknell’s Tyler Peterson was the Garth Stam Defensive MVP.
Tregear and O’Grady were selected to the All-Tournament Team for Hartwick. They were joined by Northern Kentucky’s AJ Fleak, Daniel Lahav, and Calvin Murphy, St. Francis’ Jack Webber, and Francis de Vries, and Bucknell’s Klug, Peterson, Justin Galiani, and Chris Thorsheim.
Hartwick heads to Spokane, WA for its next tournament at Gonzaga University. The Hawks play the host Bulldogs on Friday, September 11 and Houston Baptist on Sunday, September 13.
