Wild First Half Leads to 2-2 Tie at Eastern Michigan
YPSILANTI, MI - Despite breaking a recent offensive slump with two first-half goals, the Buffalo women's soccer team could only manage a tie Sunday afternoon at Eastern Michigan, 2-2. An own goal from the Bulls defense proved to be the difference in a day made for offense - the two teams combined for 58 shots.
The two UB goals marked the most the team has scored through its first four Mid-American Conference games, and the third overtime game in that same span. The Bulls opened the scoring in the fourth minute, as Taylor Thompsontook the ball on the right side and beat the keeper for her third goal of the year. Eastern answered back quickly with a goal in the ninth minute and a botched attempt by the Buffalo defense to clear away the ball wound up in the back of the net to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead before the game was even 15 minutes old.
The two teams settled down from the wild start and Buffalo (8-2-2, 1-1-2 MAC) was able to soon find the equalizer late in the half. Senior Aubrey Stahl scored her third goal in the past four games after taking a pass from Karen McMahonand going top shelf for a 2-2 tie in the 44th minute.
Eastern Michigan (0-9-2, 0-3-1 MAC) came out strong in the first 15 minutes of the second half, taking seven shots and putting two on goal against Ainsley Wheldon, who made eight saves. Katie Roberts came up just short of the would-be game winner, hitting the post in the 56th minute on one of her four total shots.
The team will get some much-needed rest and a trip home for two games next weekend. On Friday, UB will face Northern Illinois at 5:30 pm followed by a Sunday match against Western Michigan at 11 am.
