WILDCAT RALLY FALLS SHORT, MEN’S SOCCER FALLS TO NYACK 3-2
NYACK, NY -- Down 3-0 after one half of play, the Wildcats of Wilmington University tallied two second half goals, but still fell just short as they were defeated by the host Warriors of Nyack College, 3-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men’s soccer action at Moseley Field.
The Warriors jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute, when Toni Mutschler headed home a pass from Gavin Penny. Nyack made it 2-0 during the 37th minute as Felix Horn scored on a header off a pass from Marco Likos. Just a minute later, Martin Narvaez made it 3-0 Nyack, as he converted a penalty kick opportunity.
Wilmington would not go down without a fight, as the ‘Cats played a stronger second half. They finally got on the board during the 55th minute when sophomore Eddie Kowalo took a pass from junior Kresimir Nurnberger and beat the Warrior keeper on a breakaway. Kowalo struck again at the 70:24 mark, as he finished a pass from sophomore Jose Hernandez to get the ‘Cats within one, 3-2. That would be as close as they would get, as Nyack held them at bay for the remainder of the game and held on for the conference victory.
The Wildcats’ Spyros Stergiotis recorded five saves in goal, while Adrian Ibanez turned away one shot for Nyack. The Warriors held a 12-9 edge in shots, while Wilmington had the advantage in corner kicks, 8-4.
Following the game, Wilmington fell to 1-1 in the CACC and 1-3-2 overall, while Nyack improved to 1-1 in the conference and 4-2 on the season. The Wildcats return to action Tuesday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College in a CACC contest beginning at 4:00 PM.
