Burnaby, B.C. – With two first half goals, the Central Washington Wildcats defeated the Simon Fraser University Clan women’s soccer team by a score of 2-0 on Thursday night on Terry Fox Field in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action. SFU falls to 1-2 (0-1 GNAC) on the season.

“Central Washington deserves credit and they had a step on us tonight,” said head coach Shelley Howieson following the game. “In these situations, when you have a goal mouth scramble, some balls don’t go in for you and the ones that do can change the game dramatically. I thought Ali Trenter had a great work rate and April Coffin did quality work on the wing. We still have some parts of our game to work out but we are in the process of getting to where we want to be.”

The Wildcats got on the board just over two minutes into game as Carson McKole streaked right through the SFU defense and beat goalkeeper Amelia Ng, to make it 1-0 early in the game.  With 13 minutes left, the Wildcats struck again when Danielle Brandli beat Ng to give the visitors a 2-0 lead going into halftime. 

Chances to score were few and far between in the second half as SFU’s Sarah Fitzmaurice took a free kick that was just high of the net.  The Wildcats were able to hold off the Clan for a 2-0 win.

Central Washington outshot SFU 10-to-7. CWU’s Kori Butterfield made three saves to get a shutout against SFU, while Amelia Ng made five saves in the loss.

Next up, SFU takes on Seattle Pacific (No.5-ranked in the West Regional) on Saturday at 7pm.
