Willis posts hat trick in 3-0 win over Oglethorpe
A Centre player posted a hat trick for the second straight game as Claiborne Willis scored all three goals in a shutout win over Oglethorpe in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer action Friday in Atlanta, Ga.
Willis, a sophomore from Brentwood, Tenn., got the first of her goals in the 19th minute off an Oglethorpe giveaway in the box. After the Colonels took that 1-0 lead to halftime, Willis dribbled through the defense for a second unassisted goal just five minutes into the second half. Later, with 16:04 remaining, Willis scored again on an assist from Meagan Redding (Lafayette, Ind.) for the final total.
The three goals give Willis a total of four on the year and come on the heels of a hat trick by Megan Rueth (St. Charles, Ill), who scored the first three goals of her career in a win over Millsaps on Sunday.
Centre dominated the stat sheet in the match, taking 30 shots to Oglethorpe's three, including a 19-0 edge in the second half. The Colonels held an 11-2 advantage in corners.
In goal, Kelli Lenz (Louisville, Ky.) and Megan Foley (Lancaster, Ohio) combined to post the Colonels' fourth straight shutout and 11th of the season without either having to make a save. Elia Brejo made six stops for Oglethorpe.
With the win, Centre improves to 12-3-1 overall on the season with a 5-2 mark in the SCAC, dropping Oglethorpe to 2-10-1 overall and 1-6 in the league. The Colonels wrap up the regular season at Birmingham Southern (9-4-1, 5-1 SCAC) Sunday at 1 p.m.
