NEW CONCORD — Camille Gentile scored late in the first half and Wilmington College’s defense did the rest as the Quakers posted a 1-0 Ohio Athletic Conference win at Muskingum Saturday afternoon.
Wilmington is now 2-0-0 in the OAC, 4-5-2 overall. Muskingum drops to 0-2-0 in the conference, 3-8-0 for the season.
“I was very proud of the team today. We had a little bit of adversity in the very beginning. Our bus did not show up, so we had to scramble and get some vans and take off. I told the team that this kind of stuff happens and it’s not going to change what we do on the field. Our game plan was to play hard, and we did.”
Wilmington’s offense provided non-stop pressure on Muskingum from the opening whistle, but Muskie goalkeeper Sarah Poling was up to every challenge — except one.
The Quakers broke a scoreless tie when Gentile (Brownsburg, Ind.) finished a Rachel Gutowski (Petoskey, Mich.) corner kick in the 42nd minute.
“It was nice. We’ve been getting a lot of corners, but we haven’t been putting them away,” Spirk said. “It was a good challenge on our part, and Camille had a good second look and put it away.”
Wilmington continued to create looks, but settled for the one-goal win.
The Quakers finished the game with 28 shots, 13 of which were framed. Muskingum managed just six shots, three of which were turned away by Hannah Riffel (Circleville/Logan Elm), who went the distance to pick up her third shutout.
“Our defense did a great job. This was our second straight shutout in the OAC,” Spirk said.
The Quakers also dominated the corner kick battle, 13-0.
“We’re 2-0 in the conference, and that’s what counts,” Spirk said. “We played some tough non-conference games to get ready for the OAC, and I think that helped get us to where we are today.”
Wilmington will return to action with a non-conference game at Cedarville Tuesday night.
