Harriet Withers scored back-to-back goals less than five minutes apart to lift the Murray State women's soccer team past Georgia State, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Cutchin Field in Murray.
Georgia State (0-2-1) wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard in the match, as Margaret Bruemmer scored on a corner kick in the fourth minute. The goal came on the third consecutive corner kick by Bruemmer, over the span of 1:09, and bent around the near side of the goal before clanging off the far post and going in.
The score would remain at 1-0 for the halftime break, as neither team was able find the back of the net in the final 41 minutes of the opening stanza. The Racers (1-1), however, did have their chances as they outshot the Panthers, 10-5, in the frame.
In the second half, Withers finally broke through for Murray State in the 65th minute when she knocked in Julie Mooney's rebound to tie the game at one. Then, less than four minutes later, the freshman from Australia scored the would-be winning goal when she followed her own shot, that hit the post, to put the Racers on top for good at 2-1.
Withers finished the game with five total shots, four of which went on target, while Julie Mooney had six shots with two going on goal. The Racers finished the afternoon with 19 totals shots and eight on goal, compared to 10 and five, respectively, by the Panthers. Savannah Haberman also did work for Murray State in the match, as she made four saves and allowed just one goal over a full 90 minutes of action.
On Sunday, MSU will begin five-match road swing when it travels to Dayton. Kick-off between the Racers and the Flyers at Baujan Field in Dayton is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT/12 p.m. CDT.
