Women's Soccer Earns Impressive Double-Overtime Victory over San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Sophomore forward Alex Neal tallied her first goal of the season in perfect fashion, as she lifted the George Washington women's soccer to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over the University San Francisco Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium. With the score knotted at one goal apiece just 1:37 into the second overtime, Neal found herself one-on-one with Dons (0-3) goalkeeper Gabby Guaiumi as she sent the ball to the lower left corner of the net en route to victory.
"We were attacking very well, and you could sense that the girls felt a rhythm," head coach Tanya Vogel said."
The Colonials (1-2) were down 1-0 with just 21:14 remaining in the second half when sophomore Claire Haft found an open Taryn Dietrich in the box, who tapped the ball in the goal. Dietrich connected off of GW's first shot of the period.
The two clubs, who met for the first time since 1989, completed 10 minutes of overtime action without a result and were forced into the second OT.
Neal wasted little time wrapping up action, finding the back of the goal just 1:37 into the fourth period on an unassisted shot.
"We knew what we needed to do heading into the second half," said Coach Vogel. "They did a fantastic job, and I was pleased with everyone's efforts."
GW was out-shot 8-3 in the first period, but came back in the second and tallied seven shots to USF's eight. The Colonials also held a 7-3 corner kick advantage over the Dons.
Guaiumi made three saves for San Francisco on 12 GW shots.
Colonials goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe set aside 8 Dons' shots. Neal registered a team and game-high four shots, while Molly Bruh and Meg Murphy tallied two shots apiece.
GW returns to host non-conference opponent Iowa on Friday, Sept. 2. The contest marks the first time the Colonials face a Big Ten opponent in 15 years, as well as the first time team from the league visits the Mount Vernon Field. Action is slated for 4 p.m.
