Women's Soccer Ends in 3-3 Tie with Skyhawks
Women’s Soccer Back-to-Back RMAC Regular Season Champions after 3-3, 2OT Tie with Fort Lewis College
DURANGO, Colo.: Regis University women's soccer took their second consecutive RMAC regular season championship after tying Fort Lewis College 3-3 in double overtime.
The first half remained scoreless throughout, but the second half held much excitement from both sides.
Regis kicked off the half with a goal in the first 19 seconds. Senior Marissa Davisfought the Skyhawk defense for the opportunity to get a cross in to freshman Sade Akindele. The forward headed the ball into the goal to gain the lead.
Fort Lewis answered with a goal of their own in the second minute of the half, and would put another goal through in the 83rd minute of play to go up 2-1 over the Rangers.
The match came down to the one minute mark before Regis would answer to tie. Akindele ripped the ball through Skyhawk defenders to the far post for her 12th goal of the season.
Just 15 seconds after, Fort Lewis gained the lead again after putting one past the Ranger defense.
The Rangers were not to go down without a fight however as the team earned a free kick after a foul with less than 30 second left on the clock. From the free kick at midfield, Davis blasted a shot towards the Skyhawk's goal, catching the keeper sleeping and tying the game 3-3.
The match resulted in a tie, which was all Regis needed for the RMAC regular season championship title.
The Rangers finish regular season play with a 10-2-2 RMAC record and a 12-4-2 overall record.
