Women’s Soccer Falls to Delaware 1-0 in 2OT
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Marist women’s soccer team suffered a heart-breaking 1-0 loss to Delaware in double overtime to end the Navy Invitational on Sept. 14. Delaware junior Elise Krause scored on a penalty kick in the final minute of the second overtime to bring Marist to 1-4 on the season.
Making her first collegiate start in goal, freshman Makala Foley (Clifton Park, N.Y.) made 11 saves, including eight in the first half, to keep the Red Foxes in the contest. Senior Marjana Maksuti (Delmar, N.Y.) led Marist with three shots on goal in 87 minutes of action. The Red Foxes also got a pair of shots on goal from freshman Erica Crosier (Newtown, Pa.).
The Blue Hens (3-4) had 12 shots on goal before Krause fired the game-winner past Marist senior goalkeeper Andrea Wicks (East Northport, N.Y.). Sophomore Natalie Zelenky had a match-high six shots, five on goal and senior goalkeeper Jess Figueroa made four saves to pick up her second win of the season.
The best scoring chances for the Red Foxes came early in both halves, as a header from Maksuti was stopped in the sixth minute and three more shots were fired in the first eight minutes of the second half.
The Red Foxes forced a second overtime period after stopping two shots in the final two minutes of the first overtime. Foley made a save and a shot from Delaware sophomore Nikki Adams was blocked. The Blue Hens owned a 5-2 in shots in the two extra periods however.
The game marked the first time Marist had gone into double overtime since October 23, 2011 when the Red Foxes played a 2-2 draw against Canisius at Tenney Stadium.
Marist will return home for a game against Providence at 7 p.m. Sept. 17. The contest can be seen live on the Red Fox Network.
