Women’s Soccer Opens A-10 Play With Scoreless Tie Against Saint Joseph’s
On a slightly chilly night that saw rain come in late, neither the Fordham Rams nor theSaint Joseph’s Hawks could find the back of the net, as the two teams played to a scoreless tie on Jack Coffey Field.
With the tie, Fordham moves to 5-4-2 on the year, 0-0-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph’s goes to 5-3-3 overall, 0-0-1 in the league.
The Hawks had the early scoring opportunities in the first ten minutes. The Hawks’ Jen Pfeiffer headed a shot off the crossbar just 3:35 into the contest, while a header for Mo Hawkins drifted right of goal.
Pfeiffer was again denied by the crossbar in the 23rd minute, the second of her game-high five shots toward goal.
Saint Joseph’s outshot Fordham by one, 5-4, in the first half, but the neither could sneak one by Fordham goalkeeper Rachel Suther or Saint Joseph’s Lauren Jancuska.
In the second half, Christine Neal came in to play goal for the Hawks, with Suther remaining in goal for Fordham.
The Hawks once again came very close to a marker in the 55th minute, when Morgan Circe put in a shot toward goal with Suther out of the net, but it was blocked and cleared by Fordham’s Mary Solimine for a defender save.
Suther then came up with the save of the game in the 63rd minute, when Pfeiffer went in on a breakaway and was stopped by Suther toward the left side of goal.
Just a minute later, Fordham’s Kelsey Dougherty Howard had Fordham’s best chance of the half but her shot was blocked away by aSaint Joseph’s defender.
In overtime, both teams had three shots apiece with the last chance coming off the foot of Fordham’s Maria Lorena Canicatti. With about 18 seconds left, she blasted a shot from the left side to the far post, but the shot went wide and the clock ran out on both teams.
In net, Suther finished with six saves for her second shutout of the season, and the tenth of her career. Jancuska made two saves in 45 minutes of play forSaint Joseph’s, while Neal played the final 65 minutes.
The Fordham women’s soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, October 1st, when the Rams host theTempleOwls at Jack Coffey Field, beginning at 1:00 PM.
