Women's Soccer Opens Season with 3-3 Draw
HAVERFORD, Pa. - Senior midfielder Laela Brock (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) scored twice for the Pioneers Sept. 1 as the William Paterson women's soccer team (0-0-1) moved on to the Haverford Tournament final. After a 3-3 double-overtime draw with Scranton (0-0-1), WP was successful on each of its penalty-kick attempts for a 4-1 shootout victory.
Scranton got the scoring started in the 22nd minute when Megan Gilmartin blasted a high shot from the left side. The Royals found the back of the net again less than seven minutes later when Samantha Russo connected with Gianna Vitolo for a short slot shot in front of the net.
Brock put the Pioneers back within one as she re-directed a Michelle Marabondo (Kenvil, N.J./Roxbury) pass in the 33rd minute.
Marabondo added a goal of her own at the 57:17 mark on a scramble in front of the net to tie the match at 2-2. Three minutes later, the Royals regained the lead on a goal from Kelsey O'Kane.
WP tied the contest for good in the 63rd minute with Brock's second goal of the match.
Junior goalkeeper Mary Jane Seiler (Robbinsville, N.J. / Robbinsville) made four saves and allowed two goals in the first half, and junior Alyssa Falduto (Nutley, N.J. / Nutley) saved four of the five shots she faced in 65:00 for the Pioneers.
