Women's Soccer Opens up Season With 6-0 Win
Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. – Earlier this evening, the women's soccer team opened up the 2012 campaign against the Cougars of Caldwell College in a non-conference matchup. Adelphi got on the board first, scoring one in the first half, and then went on a six goal tear in the second while holding their counterparts scoreless to win 6-0. With the victory, the Panthers move to 1-0 while the Cougars drop to 0-1.
Adelphi chalked up their first goal when Emily Masiello sent a pass from midfield to Kaitlin Monteith who got behind the Cougar defense. With just the keeper to beat, she slid left and tapped it in toward the left side of the goal for the first score of the game.
On two occasions, the Brown and Gold attempted crosses just five yards out from the goal, but Cougar keeper Kristina Cabales managed to break up the potential scoring threats.
In the 20th minute, freshman Melissa Rubin had a clear shot out from just a few yards outside the box but it hit the right post and bounced back into play. Adelphi went on to register an impressive 11 shots in the first half alone while holding the visitors shotless.
The Panthers came out firing on all cylinders and it paid off early on. In the 49th minute, the duo of Masiello and Monteith struck again in the same manner as in the first. Masiello sent a cross from the left side over to a waiting Monteith who tapped it in to the top right corner of the net, making it a 2-0 game.
The ensuing three minutes looked as if Caldwell would slip even further as Adelphi managed to get off three more clean looks, but wound up just wide of the target.
However, just seven ticks passed the 68 minute mark, the Panthers put in their third goal of the game. Masiello sent in a corner attempt that resulted in a loose ball in front of the net. Donna Liotine found herself in the right place at the right time and kicked in a shot to find the back of the goal.
Just two minutes later, the Brown and Gold made it a 4-0 affair courtesy of Liotine once again. After breaking away from the defense, she found herself one on one with the keeper and successfully tapped in her second goal of the game.
Liotine notched the hat trick in the 83rd minute on essentially the same play. After receiving a pass from midfield, she dribbled the ball down the left side and sailed a low shot in toward the right side of the net to add a fifth goal on the scoreboard.
In the final minutes, Cathleen Reardon put the icing on the cake with the game's sixth and final goal as she broke through the Caldwell defense and beat keeper Robin Franchi for her first goal of the season.
Adelphi outshot Caldwell 25-1 and had a 7-0 advantage on corners.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, September 2 when they travel to take on Bloomsburg University. First kick is at 2pm. Live stats of the contest can be found here.
