Women's Soccer Shuts Out Battling Bishops 4-0 To Stay Perfect On Season
Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College women's soccer team saw four different players notch goals in today's 4-0 defeat of N.C. Wesleyan College at the Walker Athletic Complex. Playing their second game in the Inaugural Piedmont College Fall Invitational, the Lady Lions rarely looked back scoring three goals in the first half alone to mount an early attack that led to the final four goal decision.
The Lady Lions held the advantage in every offensive category tallying five corners to two for N.C. Wesleyan while also outshooting the visitors 34 to eight. Of those 34 shots, 21 came on goal forcing Battling Bishops keeper Johanna Wallinder to make 17 saves on the day.
Piedmont's first goal came in the 17th minute when Dilyn MacLean's thru ball found forward Macie Rooke who calmly buried her first goal of 2011. Just 15 minutes later, sophomore Laura Goodwin earned her first goal of the season as well with an unassisted strike from distance doubling the margin to 2-0.
A penalty kick just before half made the score 3-nil as sophomore Haley Grimes converted the try with Piedmont outshooting the Battling Bishops 17 to six through the first 45. Less than ten minutes into the second half, sophomore Meghan Heim looped a ball over a diving Wallinder to make the margin 4-0 with Rooke collecting the assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Marjorie Hammond saw more action than on opening day having to make seven saves to keep the zero on the board for PC. The young keeper extended her stretch of scoreless minutes in goal to now 427 dating back to her freshman year in 2010.
The Lady Lions now sit at 2-0 on the season and will host nearby rival Toccoa Falls College this coming Wednesday, September 7th for a 7:00 evening contest under the lights at the Walker Athletic Complex.
