Women's soccer shuts out Clarkson
POTSDAM, NY -- The RIT women's soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 2-0 win at Clarkson University (7-3-0, 1-3-0 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from Clarkson's Grass Field on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Tigers to 5-7-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the Liberty League.
Scoreless through the first 80 minutes, RIT tallied twice in less than three minutes to break the game open. Alexa Martinez (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) got RIT on the board with her first goal of the season in the 83rd minute. Her shot from the far right corner of the box deflected off a Clarkson defender and past Golden Knight goaltender Brianna Thibeau.
The Tigers sealed the win with a goal in the 86th minute. Rachael Bromson (Suffield, CT/Suffield) connected on a header from the right side of the net on a perfect cross from Kasey Dobrodziej (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor). The goal was Bromson's team-leading sixth of the season.
RIT outshot Clarkson 15-9 and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Knights’ best opportunity to score came in the 70th minute on a penalty kick. Junior Linde Zajac’s shot however, hit off the corner off the crossbar, denying the Green and Gold the go-ahead score.
Senior Ashley Valenti (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) picked up the win making five saves picking up her second shut out of the season.
RIT returns to action on Friday, October 14 with a Liberty League contest at Vassar College. Game time is at 4 pm in Poughkeepsie, New York.
