Women's Soccer Wins OT Thriller
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Senior forward Jamie Raepple gave the Niagara women's soccer team their first win of the season with a double overtime goal to down the Buffalo Bulls, 1-0 on Sunday evening.
In the 108th minute of play, junior forward Kayla Picanco fed a through ball up the middle to Raepple who slid a low shot past Bulls goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon for her first tally of the season.
"This was a great team victory," head coach Peter Veltri said. "To go on the road and beat a rival is always a good result. I was proud of the team for bouncing back after a poor outing on Friday. They showed a lot of character tonight."
Buffalo (1-4-1) held the offensive advantage during most of the contest, outshooting the Purple Eagles (1-2-0) 15-7 heading into overtime. Niagara picked up its intensity in extra time though, seeing four looks on goal compared to the Bulls' two.
Senior midfielder Michaela DeFazio lead Niagara in shots with four, while junior defender Danielle Kennedy, and rookie midfielders Sonia O'Neill and Kori Thorne also contributed opportunities for the Purple Eagles to score.
Freshman goalkeeper Claire Feiertag recorded her first collegiate shutout, making four saves.
Niagara are back in action on Friday, Sept. 7, when it takes on Ohio University at 4 p.m.
