Wright State’s Lone Chance Stuns Panthers
MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team outshot Wright State University 17-2 but just could not find the back of the net in a hard-luck, 1-0 loss Saturday afternoon at Engelmann Stadium.
UWM (5-9-1, 1-3-1 Horizon) dominated the game from the onset, but WSU (5-8-1, 2-2-1) was able to capitalize on their lone chance of game.
"This is another incredibly disappointing result," Milwaukee head coachGreg Henschel said. "We just have to continue to work harder and get ready for Oakland."
The Panthers came out of the gates with more assertiveness, creating the first chance of the game, but Maria Stephans' shot went just wide of the frame.
In the 17th minute, Wright State was able to crack the Panther defense. Allie Metzler sent a ball into the left side of the box. Paige Aguilera headed it across the mouth of goal and Natalie Sedlock was able to redirect the ball back to far side of the net for the 1-0 lead.
From there it was all Milwaukee, limiting the Raiders to just one shot for the rest of the game.
Kelly Lewers started a second-half barrage of shots for UWM, but WSU keeper Halie Pyle was up to the challenge in the 51st minute.
It was Lewers again in the 65th minute blasting a header inside the box off a corner from Amy Kauffung that went just wide.
Morgan LaPlant had a crack in the 75th followed by a blast from Stephans in the 76th but both were saved by Pyle.
UWM had arguably its best chance in the 83rd minute. Stephans carried the ball up the left side and whipped in a low cross the cut in front of the mouth of goal with a pair of Panthers in the area but no one could get a foot on it as it trickled through.
Stephans had one more go at it, ripping a shot in the 89th minute but it was blocked by the WSU defense.
Milwaukee now will have a week to prepare for its next match, a noon contest against Oakland next Saturday.
